Universal 15 Hours Free Childcare

All children aged 3 and 4 years old are automatically entitled to 15 Hours Free Childcare, regardless of whether their parents are working.

This is known as the Universal Entitlement and there is no application process for parents to complete. Once your child becomes eligible, the nursery can apply the funding on your behalf.

Funding begins from the term after your child’s third birthday and can be used towards their nursery sessions in line with the provider’s funding arrangements.

Working Parent Entitlements

In addition to the universal offer, eligible working parents may also be able to access funded childcare for younger children. As of September 2025, eligible working parents can access funded childcare from the term after their child turns 9 months old.

Eligibility requirements can change over time, so it’s always worth checking the latest guidance through the government’s childcare service.

 

When Can My Child Start Receiving Funding?

One area that often causes confusion is when funding actually begins. Children become eligible from the term after they reach the qualifying age. The funding terms are:

Spring Term: 1 January – 31 March
