How Much Is Nursery Per Day in Different Parts of the UK?

When asking how much is nursery per day, it’s important to know that prices can vary quite a bit across the UK, depending on where you live and the type of care you need.

Here’s a rough guide to average full-day nursery costs (based on full-time care, around 10 hours per day):

  • England: £63 per day (approx. £315 per week for 5 days)
  • Scotland & Wales: Around £55 per day
  • London: Usually higher, often between £75 to £100+ per day

Of course, some nurseries will charge more or less depending on location, facilities, meals included, and whether it’s a private or community nursery.

How Much Is Nursery Per Day for Different Age Groups?

Parents often ask not just how much is nursery per day, but also how costs change depending on their child’s age. And the answer is: yes, they usually do!

Caring for younger children, especially those under 2, requires more staff, specific resources, and routines like naps and bottles, which means the daily rate can be a bit higher. This is all to make sure every little one gets the support and one-to-one care they need at that age.

These prices are based on 6 or 8 hour days:

  • Under-2s: Average around £53–£71 per day
  • 2–3 years: Average around £55–£73 per day
  • 3–4 years: Average around £52–£69 per day

How Much Is Nursery Per Day in Cities vs Rural Areas?

Another factor that affects how much is nursery per day is location, with big differences between city nurseries and those in rural or suburban areas.

Nurseries in places like central London or other major cities tend to have higher overheads, which is reflected in their prices. Families in those areas might expect to pay upwards of £100 per day especially for under-2s.

In contrast, nurseries in more rural or suburban areas (like our lovely settings in Tidworth and Perham Down) tend to be more affordable, while still offering fantastic quality care, experienced teams, and enriching environments.

We believe that quality childcare shouldn’t cost the earth. At Poppies, we pride ourselves on offering excellent value while maintaining a caring, nurturing atmosphere where children feel at home.

How Can I Make Nursery More Affordable?

This is where things get exciting, because there are several ways to get support with your childcare costs!

Here’s a breakdown of what you might be able to access:

1. Government-Funded Hours

30 hours for eligible working families with children aged 9 months–4 years (recently increased from 15 hours for under-2s)

If you would like to check if you are eligible then you can do this on www.childcarechoices.gov.uk We accept funded hours at Poppies and can help you understand how it works alongside paid sessions.

2. Tax-Free Childcare

This scheme means for every £8 you put into a childcare account, the government adds an extra £2, up to £2,000 per child, per year! It’s a great option for working parents and can be used alongside funded hours.  You can find information on this at the Childcare Choices website.

3. Workplace or Employer Schemes

Some employers offer help through salary sacrifice or childcare voucher schemes. It’s worth asking your HR team what’s available!

4. Part-Time Places & Flexible Sessions

At Poppies, we offer flexible nursery places and are always happy to chat through your options, whether you’re looking for full-time care or exploring what works best for your schedule and your child. Why Nursery Care Is Worth the Investment

We know nursery is a big financial commitment. But it’s also the beginning of something truly special for your child.

In those early years, children learn more than we can imagine, from developing speech and social skills to building confidence and exploring their curiosity. Nursery helps create the foundation for learning, friendship, and independence.

At Poppies Daycare Nursery, we go beyond just childcare. We create a safe, warm, and stimulating space – a home from home environment, where every child is encouraged to be themselves. From cuddles and stories to outdoor adventures and creative play, we’re proud of the role we play in these important first years.
